From the French gateau, a word that can mean any number of things. In the south it's usually a gattò di patate, a potato pie with salame, eggs and cheese inside.
Gattò can also mean any sort of dessert cake. A gattò dolce in Tuscany is a cake with chocolate and cream.
A gattò di mandorle or gattò sardo is an almond brittle with lemon and maybe pine nuts, a traditional sweet in southern Sardinia.
