If Kálamos isn’t obscure enough, try nearby verdant, low-lying, long and narrow car-free Kástos, an island of sandy beaches and paradisical waters. The one villages, also called Kástos, has a few tavernas and bars by the port; there is another smaller one, Sarakiniko, where sailors call, and few places to stay outside of a villa.
Only 50 people live here year round, with its quiet, end-of-the-world feel; in summer, even though the population increases tenfold, it’s still pretty quiet. Nearly everyone has a boat, and in season the caique/sea taxi from Mítikas, the port on the Peloponnese goes out to the beaches. There are several paths to explore, but that’s about it.
