pitarákia

πιταράκια

pitarakia

‘Little pies’ as in individual pies, compared to pies baked in the oven and sliced into portions.Pitarákia are made on many Aegean islands.

Pitarákia Milou (Πιταράκια Μήλου) are half-moon pastries, made with flour, olive oil, lemon juice and water, and stuffed with the local myzithra cheese, red onion, and often mint and black pepper, then fried in hot olive oil. There’s also a sweet version, with cheese, sugar, eggs, and cinnamon.

On Ikaría, they also make pitarákia, often oblong in shape and filled with greens, leeks, onions, grated carrot, and often grated squash and/or pumpkin, all wrapped in phýllo and baked.
