Also spelled Mastica or Mastika, or μαστιχάτο in Greek, this increasingly popular liqueur from Chios is flavoured with the island’s unique mastic oil, giving it a unique piney, resiny taste.
Three brands are made on Chios: The Growers' Spirit, Stoupakis and the oldest, the Tetteris Distillery founded in 1912 which also distilled ouzo and other liqueurs.
It even inspired a novel by Zoe Rapti called Έρωτας με Λικέρ Μαστίχα (Love with Mastic Liqueur), in 2013.
