Some believe the Sarakatsáni, the shepherds of the Pindus and Rhodopi mountains are descendants of the ancient Dorian Greeks who took to the hills, centuries and centuries ago, and preserved customs and habits going back to Homeric times. Their classic pie is made with homemade pastry, cabbage, feta and onions, baked over a fire.
Today the Sarakatsáni have become totally assimilated into modern Greece, but on special occasions dress in their traditional costumes and recall their old songs, dances and poetry.
