Sardines, singular σαρδέλα. One of the cheapest and most popular fish in Greece (actually they are generally a mix of small pilchards and other young fish). They are very tasty, as a meze or ‘married’ aka stuffed and grilled (σαρδέλες παντρεμένες στα κάρβουνα, sardéles padreménes sta kárvouna) as my father in the photo will attest!
Lesvos is famous for its σαρδέλες παστελες (sardéles pastéles): small sardines de-boned, salted and eaten raw, or with lemon and oil.
