Crouton means ‘little crust’, although sometimes in France they can be as big as a slice of bread, especially the ones destined for a fish soup covered with melted cheese. Baked or fried, flavoured with garlic, herbs or onions, they add a nice crunch to soups, salads and other dishes.
S’ennuyer comme un croûton de pain derrière une malle ‘To be as bored as a crouton stuck behind a trunk’.
