From San Marziale, it's a long straight walk east up the Fondamenta della Misericordia to the Fondamenta degli Ormesini (‘of the dealers in ormesin’, a delicate fabric made in the Persian city Ormuz).
Originally an outlying section of muddy swamps, this area was drained in the 11th and 12th centuries into three canals (Sensa, Misericordia and Madonna dell’Orto) laid out in a regular plan and making one of the most serene places in Venice to watch a sunset. Equally straight lanes and canals were cut to the north, opening up views of the lagoon.
