Campo Santa Margherita, lined with houses from the 14th and 15th centuries, is Dorsoduro’s morning marketplace and evening meeting-place. Although the church has been closed since Napoleon, its rows of weird masks and dragons have been transplanted to an old house and an amputated campanile on the north side of the campo; the church building has been abandoned since its last tenant, a cinema, left.
The isolated building near the centre is the Scuola dei Varotari, or ‘Tanners’ Guild’, with a relief of the Madonna della Misericordia protecting the tanners, so worn that it could be anyone under her mantle.
