Now a private island with a luxury hotel

Sacca Sessola, pre-luxury hotel

This 17-hectare artificial island was made of material dredged to make a commercial port for Venice in 1870. It was a hospital for contagious diseases until 1980, then briefly served as a Unesco marine research centre: now prettily renamed Isola delle Rose, it hosts the 266 room five-star JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa.
