The story goes that when St Ilario, patron saint of Parma passed through the city on a snowy day without any shoes, a local cobbler took pity and gave him a pair. The next day, there was a pair of solid gold ones in their place. Today the city remembers them with decorated sugar cookies. Some of the prettiest are made by the local Carmelite nuns.
