A traditional pastry of southern Puglia, particularly in the Salento, where they eat them fresh from the oven for breakfast. In 2008, a local pastry chef added cocoa to the dough for colour and named it after the newly-elected U.S. president—the pasticciotto Obama. They're a hit.
Sometimes spelled pasta ciotti; in Rome, they are called bocconotti.
