Four different tasty funghi of the Terfezia family grow only in certain sandy areas around Oristano in western Sardinia, where they are known as tuvara dies arenas or tartufo delle sabbia.
Unlike real truffles, Terfezia have no odour, so hunters armed with a long spear-like pole, have to depend on their age-old wisdom and the subtle variations in the vibrations of the earth when they tap the ground with the pole to locate them, buried 10cm underground.
