grey mullet

Mugil cephalus is its scientific name, but Italians usually prefer muggine, at least on menus. A thick lipped grey mullet (Chelon labrosus) is a bosega.

Naturally it has many other names, to wit:

Abruzzo: Cefalo mazzone, Mugella

Calabria: Cefalu verace

Campania: Cefalo verace, Cefaro mazzone

Emilia Romagna: Zòevli

Friuli Venezia Giulia: Zèvoli, Maciato

Liguria: Carida, Mussao

Marche: Baldighera, Mazzone

Puglia: Capocefalo, Capuozzo

Sardinia: Cefalu, Cafanu

Sicily: Capulatu, Lustru

Tuscany: Muggine caparello, Mazzone
