nasello

European hake

A very tasty fish often misnamed as its distant cousin the merluzzo (cod). Like its cousin, the nasello is under pressure, though populations are increasing after becoming depleted in the 1990s. In Liguria, they make a zuppa di naselli with celery, carrots, and tomatoes.

Catching or selling the fry is still prohibited.
