Italy has several distinct races of black pig. Closer to the wild boar than other domestic pigs, they provide top quality meats and especially charcuterie. Traditionally raised in the open, they are becoming increasingly popular. Some of the races are: Nero dei Nebrodi, or Nero delle Madonie, from the mountains of northeast Sicily; Nero di Calabria; Suino nero di Parma, and Suino nero Casertana (Campania).
