The golden aperitivo with the classy Art Nouveau label has been made since 1860 in Benevento, Italy's city of witches (streghe). The legends of secret black masses along the river Sabato (Sabbath) go way back. Under the Romans Benevento had an important Temple of Isis; the museum and the streets are full of Egyptian relics.
Liquore Strega was a favourite of Don Vito Corleone in Mario Puzo's Godfather. It's a tasty concoction of 70 different ingredients, including mint, cinnamon, juniper and saffron (which lends it the intense colour), before it's aged in ash barrels.
