Grana refers to the grainy texture of hard, aged cheeses made in large wheels and drums. Parmigiano-Reggiano and Lombardy's Grana Padano are the most famous; the word 'grana' in fact, cannot legally be used for any other cheese.
The best known of the others, of more recent origin, are Trentingrana, Granone Lodigiano and Gransardo, the last made of sheep's milk.
