Cynar

artichoke and herbal based liqueur

Created in 1952 and bearing one of the labels that really stands out in an Italian bar, Cynar is a dark brown bittersweet liqueur made of 13 herbs, include artichokes (Cynara scolymus). Drunk as an aperitif, digestif, or mixed in a cocktail, it owed much of its initial popularity in Italy to an ad campaign featuring Ernesto Calindri.

Since 1995 it has been made by the Campari group: along with Italy, it's extremely popular in Switzerland and Brazil.
