mistrà

anise liqueur

Mistra is a town in the Peloponnese; when the Venetians conquered it in 1687, they discovered Greek ouzo there, and brought it back to Italy, naming it after the town the discovered. It's flavoured with both green anise and star anise.

Pallini and Varnelli make popular brands of this firewater now distinctive to the Marche, although beware that it is something of an acquired taste! Another version is Anisetta, from Ascoli Piceno.

Similar to sambuca.
