Originally from Módica in eastern Sicily, these unusual pastries are believed to have originated during Spanish rule in the 16th century, when Spanish cooks introduced chocolate and game-filled empanadas to the big island. Today the filling is made from minced beef, almonds, chocolate, walnuts, sugar, cinnamon and cloves.
Also known as impanatiglie or dolce di carne.
