A difficult little citrus fruit, an 18th-century cross between bitter orange and the Mediterranean sweet lemon (limetta). Its oil is used in perfumes, colognes and confectionaries (and to flavour Earl Grey tea). 80% of the world's bergamots come from Calabria's Ionian coast, around Reggio. In Calabria they use it to flavour ice cream, and also make a liqueur from it called Bergotto.
