From Zákynthos Town, the coastal road leads north, past the Kryonéri Fountain, built by the Venetians to water their ships; the red rock overhead featured as a suicide leap in a popular Greek novel, Kókkinos Vráchos by Grigoris Xenopoulos (1867-1951), member of the Academy of Athens, who with Kostis Palamas, Angelos Sikelianos and Nikos Kazantzakis founded the Society of Greek Writers (Εταιρεία Ελλήνων Λογοτεχνών).
Beyond lie a series of sandy beaches, backed by orchards and vineyards where holiday development is taking off with abandon, starting with long and narrow Tsiliví, with a beach safe for children, which is also the site of the private Milanio Maritime Museum with a fascinating collection of uniforms, model ships, paintings and much more.
