Ice cream, an essential of the Greek summer, along with Italian style gelato and frozen Greek yogurt. The biggest producer is Kayak, which has shops in many large cities.
Although you can find ready-made ice cream treats in every bar and kiosk, don't miss an artisanal ice cream shop. Along with all the usual flavours, be sure to try the original, thick-textured Greek ice cream, κασάτο (kasáto), once made with sheep's milk, and kaimaki and baklava with cream, along with the delicious Aegina pistachio (fystiki aeginis) flavour.
Some other ice cream words:
χωνάκι παγωτού (chonáki pagotoú) ice cream cone
παγωτό ξυλάκι (pagotó xyláki) popsicle
παγωτατζίδικο (pagotatzídiko) ice cream shop
σορμπέ (sorbét) sorbet
Greece is also a fertile field for scary ice cream art from the 1970s.
