fountoúki

φουντούκι

Hazelnut. Grown in Greece since ancient times. Évia, the Peloponnese, the northern Epirus, Thessaly and Macedonia are the major producers of fountoúkia, although they don't often appear in traditional recipes.

Curiously, their alternative English name, filbert, comes from 'Phyllis' although Greeks associate her with almonds.
