Well at least some folks say these little stuffed pasta squares were invented in Nice, which was part of Italy until 1860 (and the birthplace of Garibaldi), but similar pasta was around at least since the time of Dante, so who knows?
But like gnocchi, it is a very traditional family dish in Nice: raviolis à la niçoise are stuffed with finely minced chard and daube, as opposed to Ravioles du Dauphiné.
