Boletus edulis, the cèpe de Bordeaux is for many the king of mushrooms. Some of these are enormous, with caps measuring up to 40cm in diametre, but usually the slugs find them before you do. They grow in forests from late summer into autumn, depending on the rains.
Other names include cèpe polonais, tête rousse, gros pied, and cèpe du Périgord.
