One of the world’s greatest producers, France has been fermenting grapes since the 6th century BC, when Greek colonists brought the first vines to Marseille. Today the country produces some seven billion bottles of wine a year. Bordeaux is the biggest wine area in the world, and Burgundy, Côtes du Rhône, Languedoc, Alsace and Champagne are no slackers either, not to mention all the wines that get transformed into Cognac and Armagnac.
Until French wine gets a badly-needed app of its own, here is a good introduction to French wine, as well as a list of useful wine words.
