In this large, mostly postward neighbourhood east of Florence, some 88,000 Florentines live far from the tourists in what was originally a military training ground. Campo di Marte has its own train station, mostly used by comuters; all trains from the south of Tuscany stop here on their way to Santa Maria Novella. Plans are for the station to be the temporary high-speed terminal during the construction of an underground station, Firenze Belfiore on Viale Belfiore.
The neighbourhood's most famous monument is the Stadio Artemio Franchi (1931) designed in reinforced concrete by Pier Luigi Nervi where ACF Fiorentina take their licks. Football fans can also take in the Museo del Calcio.
