Well, well, well, who can say Florence is an old fuddy duddy now? It's spanking new opera theatre, in the shape of a giant tiled cube (with surfaces especially designed for projecting images) was the result of a design contest won by studio ABDR and its architects Maria Laura Arlotti, Michele Beccu, Paolo Desideri and Filippo Raimondo.
The theatre was inaugurated in 2011 with a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony by Zubin Mehta and began a fully functioning season in 2014.
There's an outdoor rooftop amphitheatre seating 2000 for performances under the stars, and an indoor opera theatre seating 1800 with state of the art acoustics and a stage twice as deep as typical European theatres. An auditorium for concerts is under construction nearby.
