Born in Bologna, painter and engraver Francesco Brizio (1574-1623) was schooled in the Carracci's Academy but does not seem to have followed them to Rome. Some of his intense, often tenebroso paintings were made for San Domenico, San Petronio, the Palazzo Bentivoglio and the cloister of San Michele in Bosco, though not many remain in place today.
