Originally the 17th-century convent of Santa Monica, this building with the giant ramp on the Ramblas was adapted by Helio Piñon and Albert Viaplana in 1984 as one of Barcelona's first art and cultural centres, as part of the great pre-Olympic clean up of the once seedy seafront. It hosts a constant flow of contemporary art exhibits, both by local artists and visitors, sponsored by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
