The festival of Barcelona's co-patron saint, the Virgin of La Mercè, is celebrated all across the city from 19-24 September with hundreds of cultural events and exhibitions, free museums, drum groups, circus performers, traditional music, sardana, dances with sticks (the ball de batons), processions of gegants, human towers (castellers) and the city’s most spectacular and daring correfoc (see the video below). Add extraordinary 3-D projections on the façade of the Ajuntament and BAM, a festival of alternative music. And at the very end, a mind-blowing display of music and fireworks over Montjuïc’s Font Mágica.
Most events (see the website for the programme) are free, although you will need tickets for some: pick them up at the Palau de la Virreina.
