Barcelona's once fuddy-duddy science museum was taken over by La Caixa bank and relaunched as CosmoCaixa in 2004. A new building was added to the attractive Modernista original (built as an asylum by Josep Domènech i Estapà in 1894) and filled with fascinating, interactive scientific exhibits.
There's a geological wall demonstrating the formation of rocks, a submerged Amazonian rain forest, a planetarium and weather station, and plenty for children including a special hands-on section for tots called Toca, Toca ('touch touch'). The frequent special exhibitions are excellent as well.
Outside the museum by the Ronda de Dalt there’s a full-scale model of Narcis Monturiol’s submarine.
