Admires the fabled Roman aqueduct of the Pont du Gard in Nîmes – swims in the lagoons along the coast and stops off at the seaside towns of Sete, Maguelone and Agde – enjoys  a glass of vin in the beautiful rural region of the Hérault; the most prolific wine-producing area in France – lets its hair down in the lively, fun-filled bars and clubs of Montpellier

Extract: The Best Political Show in France

He’s an enormous man, both in height and girth, a man full of life. You wouldn’t miss him in a crowd, with his owlish glasses and electrified shock of hair, and crowds are exactly where Georges Frêche likes to be. The Socialist mayor of Montpellier from 1977 to 2004, Frêche presided over its remarkable transformation into one of the most vibrant and fastest-growing cities in France, while still finding time to teach a full schedule of courses on the history of law at the University. No mayor in France ever presided over such a gargantuan building program: shopping malls, convention halls and cultural institutions, governmental palaces and a middle-income housing project called ‘Antigone’ that looks like Versailles on steroids.

To accompany it, Frêche created an equally gargantuan and noisy public relations machine that embarasses many of the French. In truth, it would have embarassed P.T. Barnum. ...click here to read the rest

Reader Reviews

Well written & informative., 5/5
We are holidaying in this region for the first time this year & wanted as much info as we could get. Encouraged by previous reviewa we ordered & were delighted, on receipt, to find it just as we had hoped. We now have every expectation of making the most of the oportunities available in what appears to be a delightful area.

An absolutely superior team of travel writers, 5/5
Facaros and Pauls are better than any travel writer partnership that we have ever known, and we've read a lot of them. Their guides are practical, but also chock full of aesthetic advice that you will find nowhere else. They take risks in their recommendations, which are wonderfully and unpredictably erudite. Their books offer many unexpected surprises that are sprinkled amidst useful advice. I have never found travel books as useful, as quirkily intelligent, and as fun as these. They are also superlative writers in clarity of style and quirky detail.

Highest recommendation. You will be amazed at their eloquence and delighted at the paths they suggest. This is uniquely valuable.

Wherever we go in Western Europe, we seek to see if they have written a book about it. We expect fascinating observation, unusual ideas for entertainment, and genuine intellectual depth. No other travel writers accomplish this.

Highest recommendation. You will be amazed at their eloquence and delighted at the paths they suggest. This is uniquely valuable. We have even gotten to know them through our long fascination with Europe, and I have to say: they NEVER disappoint.
